What do you see?

Back in December, I bemoaned the chaotic state of my dining room and posted a picture of the chaos. I fully intended to post a picture of the room when I'd tidied and decorated but never got round to it, so here you are:-

Keep the home fires burning... Posted by Picasa

And of course, as ever, it got me musing about writing and characters. You see, that's a nice scene, it's pretty, clean and aesthetically pleasing. But I know there are unspeakable stains on the floorboards, that the rug is in the wrong place, and there are still dust sheets just out of shot...

It reminds me of an excercise Patricia McLinn once posted on eHarlequin.com. She invited us to describe a room, the same room, from the different POVs of the hero and the heroine.

Looking at this scene, Kier would have his eye on the exit, Jenny on the tree. Alan would be feeling out of place, Mari would be wanting to sit down in the armchair in the corner behind the tree. Emily would take a place at the table and wait for someone to serve her, Tristan would be, regrettably, eyeing up the drinks table...

What about your characters?

LOL Sadhbh!

Well, behind the tree to the right of the fireplace is another bookcase a bit like the bureau opposite. I'll admit they're not really 'reading' books as such, more reference, guides and cooking.

As for where are the books in my house.... Well, Husband's computer space on the landing is surrounded by shelves and bookcases of a seriously good historical library. And I do mean seriously good - he buys history books, turns to the references section and goes, "got that, got that, got that..."

Then there are two big white-painted book cases on the landing, one small and one big pine bookcase on the small landing, four shelves and sundry piles in the computer room, a bookcase instead of a bedside table on my side of the bed, and several four-foot high piles of random books all around the bedroom.

Is that better?

We try and keep the dining room a bit more elegant and tidy (eventually it will have dark, soft, regency green walls and cream trim), but everywhere else goes for unpretentious lived-in and relaxed. We have plans to line one wall of the living room with book cases for books, ornaments, lamps, DVDs and CDs.
